Oh how I love eye makeup! When I was growing up in India during the 90s, makeup was just meant to be for special occasions. We were not allowed to wear any makeup to school and that’s just how it was. I don’t think I missed it much because it wasn’t a thing at all!! And makeup would have anyways melted off my face because I was always out playing in the sun, swimming or climbing trees!!

I remember starting off with just kohl on my lower lash line when I was 16. Then I gradually moved on to wearing jet black liquid eye liner on my eyelids. That was it for many many years! And honestly, that’s my comfortable, go to look [just add some nice smelling lip gloss]!

After moving to Toronto, I have discovered some amazing eye products after a lot of trial & error! So you don’t have to go through the testing phase 😉 A mini tip for trying out eye makeup, specially kohl pencils and eyeliners – swatch it on the back of your hand and then walk around the store for about ten minutes. Then rub the product gently with your  fingers. This will be a good smudge test. For me, a good eye makeup product passes the first test if it doesn’t smudge. and then the ultimate test is if it stays on for 8 – 10 hours.

Product 1 – Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in the shade Blacquer

A basic eye pencil that can be worn on the lower and upper water line and lids as well. Beautiful color. Super soft texture. It glides like butter. Comes in an easy to use twist up pencil. I usually apply it on my lower water line. I apply a thicker line for a bolder look. Also, because I wear glasses, I usually apply a generous coat on my lower water line. This makes my eyes look bigger.

Product 2 – Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in the shade Trooper

This product rightfully deserves all the hype and hoopla around it! I have tried many many pen eyeliners and this one stands out. The brush tip is perfect. Even if you don’t have very steady hands, worry not! The tattoo liner shall rescue you! It is super easy to apply the product really close to the lashes. I loveeee it and do not have any cons to write about this one!

Product 3 – MAC Liquidlast Liner

This is the most recent entry into my eye makeup collection. I was just looking around at buying lipsticks in the MAC store and the salesperson who was helping had a stunning black eye liner on. I obviously asked what she was wearing (!!!) and she pointed me to this one.

It is a beautiful formula – because it doesn’t peel off the skin on my lids when I remove it at the end of the day! The brush is a let down, but I work my way around it by using a thin makeup brush. This applies beautifully, and dries off in about 10 – 20 seconds. So if you’ve made a mistake, you can quickly rub it off with a moist cotton swab. It dries into this amazing matte black color and stays on forever!

Tips & Tricks!!

For a bolder black eyeliner look – When I am going for a thick black eyeliner look, mostly when I am going out at night, I like to create an outline on my lid with the Kat Von D Tattoo liner and then fill it with the MAC liquid eyeliner. I get complimented on my eyes, every single time I do this!

Now, for the second tip, I will introduce you to the MAC eyeshadow in Carbon (CAD 19)! Say you want to finish off your smudgy eye pencil before you lay your hands on the stunning Marc Jacobs pencil (!!), apply your eye pencil on your lower water line or like you normally would, and then take the black eyeshadow on a smudge brush, tap off the excess and pat the product on the eyeliner. This trick has worked on the smudgiest eyeliners in my life!

Until next time!
